According to Charlton Burch in his Lightworks interview with Ray Johnson: “Ray took pride in his workmanlike ways. Ray may have had an easy style, but it was tempered in thoughtful disciplined ways.”20 In the same essay Burch talks about Ray’s transition to New York City after 1948, saying: “He started shaping connections to the world of commercial design and publishing…” Burch theorizes that this is where the whole “work for hire shuffle” started. “The systematic presentation of Ray by Ray.”
