Back Side of Collage
Apparently, Charter named his art work a "cryba" (in the vein of Ray's "moticos"?), writing out "Cryba By Weeks." So Ray used that term to make "Crybaby" Weeks. Charter then went on to use the phrase as his new nickname.
Ray Show Coming Along
With a little more than two months to go before the opening, the Ray Johnson "tutelary show" is really coming together. Most of the work is in, catalogue essays chosen, etc. There's almost TOO much work to fit in our small space. But I can see it on the walls, picture the whole arc of the show--1943-1967.
Just last week, I received a newly discovered Ray collage from my step-dad. Charter has been telling about his brief correspondence with Ray back in the 60s but never could find the piece. One more look in his big boxes in the closet and the collage popped out. Here it is (above) front and back.
